Travels, Exploration and History from Helen Kahn

Item 24 is a first American edition of the story of a tragic expedition: The Voyage of the Jeannette, the ship and ice journals of George W. De Long. Edited by his wife, Emma De Long, published in 1884. This text was based partly on De Long's notes and partly on accounts of survivors, of which De Long was not one. De Long led an expedition by sea from San Francisco to find a route to the North Pole. However, the ship became trapped and crushed in the ice. The crew escaped on three small boats, one of which was lost with no survivors, one of which was rescued, and the third of which reached an isolated location on the Siberian coast. De Long was with the third group, but only two scouts sent out to seek help survived. The others, De Long included, starved before being found the following year. $450.
