Item 94 is a Narrative of the Proceedings of the Deputation to Madrid on behalf of the Spanish Prisoners, by Edward Steane, published in 1864. The mid-19th century was not a time of great religious liberty in Spain. Manuel Matamoros and others were Protestant leaders at a time when Spain was thinking about the good old days of the Inquisition. They were sentenced to serious jail time for promoting religions other than the state Catholicism. However, this did not go over well in the Protestant states of Europe, leading to the formation of the Evangelical Alliance, which published this item in 1864. Their protests led to major reductions in the sentences. It includes photographs of the members of the Alliance. The Revolution of 1868 threw out the old laws and guaranteed religious freedom in Spain. €150 (US $190).
