Title GANDHI, MOHANDAS K AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED, TO DWIJENDRANATH TAGORE ("BORODADA")
Year Published 1922
Place Printed Sabarmati Jail, Ahmedabad
Description GANDHI, MOHANDAS K AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED, TO DWIJENDRANATH TAGORE ("BORODADA") rejoicing that his incarceration has come when he felt fully prepared, expressing joy that "India's wonderful calm at this moment is significant of her strength", and asking him to send messages of support to Young India, written in pencil, 2 pages, 8vo, Sabarmati Jail, Ahmedabad, 13 March [1922]
Lot Note CATALOGUE NOTE Gandhi writes of his calm at a crucial moment in the struggle for Independence. Three days earlier, soon after calling off the non-cooperation movement (see previous lot), Gandhi had been arrested at his ashram and taken to the nearby jail. Gandhi's "Great Trial" followed on 18 March, when he was convicted of sedition and sentenced to six years imprisonment. The peaceful response in India to these inflammatory actions was a cause of great joy to Gandhi. His correspondent here is the poet and philosopher Dwijendranath Tagore, affectionately known as Borodada (elder brother) by his younger brother Rabindranath Tagore and other intimates such as Gandhi. Unpublished.
