Description

PUSHKIN, Aleksandr Sergeevich (1799-1837). Evgenii Onegin. Roman v stikhakh. Gl. 1-2. [Eugene Onegin. A novel in verse. Chapters 1 and 2.] St. Petersburg: at the press of the Department of Public Instruction, 1825; and Moscow: Avgust Semen, 1826. Volumes 1-2 (of 7) in one volume, 12A (156 x 100mm). With the half-titles. (The first title repaired in the inside margin, occasional browning, spotting, and faint dampstain.) Contemporary Russian red half leather (spine head nearly detached but holding, extremities rubbed, sides scuffed). Provenance: 'B.G.' (binding, shelfmark '229' on the first half-title). FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST TWO PARTS OF PUSHKIN'S MASTERPIECE -- the first appearance in print of the opening chapters of the most important work in Russian literature. A collected edition appeared later, in 1833, but Onegin in parts, which were published serially over the course of 7 years, is among the rarest Russian books of the 19th century. Kilgour 877, Smirnov-Sokol'skii 5, 7.
