Lot Note

Shirley 118, noting the British Library example; Tooley, 14, adding the Beans Lloyd Triestino example; Woodward The Maps and Prints of Paolo Forlani, map 82, notes, disputing the attribution to Forlani, referring to the John Carter Brown Library example. CATALOGUE NOTE a fine example of this rare "Lafreri-school" map of the world on an oval projection, copied from Paolo Forlani, by the Venetian publisher Donato Bertelli, recorded in only two institutional locations, and a third example whose location is unknown. In the 1550s and 1560s Italian map-publishers dominated European cartography but, as many of the maps were sold separately, they had a high mortality rare, and are very difficult for the modern collector to obtain.
