Lot Note

Completely unpublished. Fine collection of fifty-six watercolors and one pencil drawing by A. de Beaumont and Amedeo Preziosi accomplished by the two artists during a trip organized by le Duc Roger de Bauffremont to the Ottoman Empire. Some thirty of the watercolors depict views of Bosphorus, Therapia and other sites in and around Constantinople. The remainder depict scenes and costumes of Egypt. The works are various sizes ranging from large to small (13 7/8 x 20 1/4 in.; 354 x 520 mm to 5 3/8 x 4 in.; 142 x 102 mm). Many of the smaller watercolors are mounted together on boards. Contained in a large red morocco box by A. Giroux & Cie (label), white moiré silk lining. Both de Beaumont and Preziosi were known as illustrators of travel books in the middle nineteenth century. The present watercolors and drawing were never published and constitute a valuable and exquisitely rendered documentary of the sites visited and local costumes of the period.
