Lot Note
|
Beautiful, extra illustrated first edition, including the rare fourth volume, of a highly important work on the history of Amsterdam by Jan Wagenaar (1709-1773). The extra plates contain i.a. a set of the plates by Fouquet. These plates were originally published in Fouquet’s Atlas of Amsterdam in 1775, containing engravings from a number of skilled artists. The Atlas of Fouquet contains the most famous illustrations and views of Amsterdam in the 18th century. Wagenaar’s history of Amsterdam is entirely founded on authentic documents, and valuable details are given for the history of “the East- and West-India Companies, the commercial relations of Amsterdam with New-Netherland, notes on the Brownists, etc.” (Muller). Fine complete set of the first edition, including the Supplement fourth volume, and a richly extra illustrated copy of the celebrated “History of Amsterdam” by Jan Wagenaar. Muller, America, 1574; Nijhoff-Van Hattum 311
