Magnificent Half Plate Daguerreotype Gold Mining Scene by Robert Vance C. 1850. Previously unknown/unpublished and offered here for the first time. The image is untouched/uncleaned and housed in the original casing, the red velvet pad embossed with Vance's logo listing his locations in San Francisco, Sacramento and Marysville. Superb quality and condition, with just some minor edge tarnish. Absolutely exquisite detail depicting seventeen workmen, many engaged with shovels and pans working sluice boxes, while others oversee the operation from the top of the mining cut. Remarkably detailed view of the equipment/structures involved in this rather primitive process, with the number of workmen involved indicating this was a very productive strike. Shirts of many of the workmen delicately tinted. A great daguerreotype and an important addition to the fascinating and romantic history of the California Gold Rush.
