Baugniet on india paper, mounted, 2 engraved maps (browned), some spotting as usual, one or two plates with light dampstains, publisher's dark purple half morocco, gilt arms of Jerusalem on upper covers, gilt panelled spines, g.e., corners worn [Abbey, Travel 385 and 272; Tooley 401-402; Blackmer 1432], elephant folio (602 x 429mm.), F.G. Moon, 1842-1849
Lot Note One of a very few coloured copies where the plates are not mounted on card. An advantage of this issue is the absence of any cockling that bedevils many copies on card. Sir Eldon Gorst (1861–1911), diplomatist and colonial administrator, whose controversial and influential career in Egypt culminated in four years as Consul General from 1907 to 1911, when he was succeeded by Kitchener (see entry in DNB); thence by descent to the current owners.
