AE Introduces a Listing Service [without the standard charges]

Books for Sale is accessible in several ways.
By Bruce McKinney
Today on AE you'll find a new listing site for books, manuscripts and ephemera. We call it Books for Sale. It's a fresh effort to increase sales and lower costs for buyers and sellers of printed materials. In its conception it is simple: provide a neutral place for buyers and sellers to find each other. Create no barriers, build no walls, charge no commissions, broaden searches to help buyers find interesting materials and encourage book buyers to look past the listings they see to the bookseller they often ignore. Typically eighty-five percent of seller inventories aren't posted anywhere.
The goal is to put the buyer, the seller, book catalogues, book listings, book auctions, and transaction history on a single screen in the belief an informed collector becomes an empowered buyer. Online booksellers, book selling sites, auction houses, reference materials and related sites beyond the capacity to describe each occupy a sliver of bandwidth on the net and hope to be discovered and valued. They each deserve support but are often unable to generate sufficient traffic to maintain their enterprises. Even very large sites, some with thousands of customers and millions of hits, feel compelled to demand of their customers a larger share of each transaction. If Goliath needs more money, how much less able is David to pay it?
Booksellers, a throwback to the 19th century when entrepreneurs were many and oligopolies few, these days need the inexpensive visibility and access that permit customers, in the fullness of time, to find them. To do this we all need stand under one tent. It's neither a certain or sure thing a buyer will arrive so dealers must have ways to inexpensively post and wait. In the fullness of time some material will sell. That's the way it's been and it's the way it will be. On AE we understand this model and now offer an approach that mimics the bookseller's reality.
Listing in Books for Sale is simply a function of membership level. For our Premium Services members it is a no-additional-cost service. Create a listing in the International Bookseller's Directory and then upload your inventory. For Research members it's an upgrade: the $98.40 difference between an annual research membership $141.60 and an Octavo Premium Services membership - $240. Click on the images with each page of this story for a visual perspective.
Here is how it works.
Anyone, member or visitor, has access to extensive free services on AE. No sign-in is required. Today there is an additional service: Books for Sale. Choose this link in the free services menu to reach two search forms: Keyword and Advanced Search. Keyword is actually a Sequential Intuitive Search and Advanced is the traditional multi-field approach. The focus is on the book AND the seller.
Let's try a search. Let's try ALBANY is the Keyword Search. The results quickly appear in a multi-field array. If you have a preference for how the material is ordered you can select any of the blue links across the top of the page. Click on Price and then click again. We'll re-sequence the results and remember your preference for future searches. You can see the listings from highest to lowest or lowest to highest price.
Now click on any blue title link. The red link at the top of the listing shows you the seller's file, where he lists, their homepage link, a schedule of catalogues [if they issue them], payment options, some business history and various ways to contact them.
Now scroll down the page. The listing you clicked on is there. Keep on going and there is a link "Click here to purchase or inquire about this book." Select this option.
This opens an email to the seller. It contains all necessary information for the seller to identify the item of interest. You have options to select "I'd like to inquire" or "I'd like to purchase." Next you identify yourself and ask questions or inquire how the sale will be completed. At the bottom you select your preferences for contact. If you click telephone a field will open for your number. If you prefer email select that option. The "Copy me" box is pre-checked. It will send a copy to the email address you have provided to the seller.
Searches can also be initiated on the top of every page through the Rare Book Search and Research link. Auction searches now contain a link to also search the same item in BFS and there is a second link to directly search BFS.
If you are a seller your experience will be different. Your material will be uploaded to be on the other side of the searches.
To list your material in Books for Sale you need to be a Premium Services member. If you aren't a member at this level you'll need to first upgrade to Premium Services ?Octavo. If you are a research member we'll credit you the remaining balance on your subscription and charge you the difference. If you are creating an entirely new account simply look in the Sign-in box for the Sign-Up link. If you are upgrading send us an email [bmckinney@americanaexchange.com]. We'll calculate your credit before you upgrade.
Once signed in the first thing to do is to create your listing in the International Bookseller's Directory. What you put here will be linked to every record you upload or post to BFS. Look in the free services section of the menu [on the left] for the International Bookseller's Directory and then select it. Next you'll see a red link "I want to join this directory." Click here.

Learn about the seller. Contact them directly.
This is a file with many parts. Only those fields you enter information in will be included. When you are complete click SUBMIT. You can return at any time to complete or refresh this information. It's an evergreen file. This information will be linked to each of your listings.
Now you need to provide us with a copy of your listings. From whatever source you use prepare a copy. Many dealers keep a current copy on their desktop. Now log-in to AE. The first screen that comes up is your Premium Services Home Page [there is always a link in the Sign-in Box while you are signed to reposition you to your home page]. The first link in the text opens an upload link. Click on the BROWSE button, locate your file of listings. Highlight the file and it will appear in the Catalogue window. Then click upload.
The time to upload will depend on your connection. Our servers are very fast but large files may take a few minutes. The first time it will take about twelve hours before your files first appear.
Options to revise, delete, report.
You can both create and edit any records you maintain in BFS right from the Web Catalogue module. When we integrated your material we placed your files there for easy editing. Web Catalogue is a link in the paid services menu. You can also batch modify your records whenever you wish using outside services. We'll simply integrate the changes you provide.
This service is only a few days old. It's essentially a free service to premium members and available to research members for a small premium. There are no listing fees and we do not anticipate there will be. We hope our dealer members will find customers and our collector-members the material they want. We hope you both will use the database extensively for your research and evaluation and if, in time the market becomes more efficient, buyers more enthused and sellers more prosperous it will be achieving every goal we set out to accomplish with it.
